Roël Calister was born in 1979 on the island of Curaçao, Dutch Antilles. At a very young age it was already obvious that percussions had a special place in his life. When he didn’t have a real instrument he would do the expected: he’d make one, or use any object he could find; something very common in Antillean tradition.

At the age of 18 he left home for the Netherlands, to study Finance and Accounting. After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in 2001 he initiated his formal percussion studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory. His main influences for percussions and drums are Marcos Suzano, Cyro Baptista, Airto Moreira, Antonio Sanchez, Brian Blade and Pernell Saturnino. With this last percussionist, also from Curaçao, he played in the band of Jazz-vocalist and sister Izaline Calister for five years.

Roël is especially known for his ability to tastefully mix styles like pop, rock, latin and jazz with folklore elements and world music. Apart from the conventional drums and congas, he also uses instruments such as cajon, udu, pandeiro. These and other instruments from the diverse assortment of astonishing African and Caribbean collection play a prominent role in Roël’s project ‘At’awó’.

Aside from Ata’wo, a steady gig with ‘Orange Grove’, with singer ‘Izaline Calister’ and various free-lance activities, he is also a talented facilitator and percussion-motivator. He has worked with various organizations and multinational companies such as Shell, ABN AMRO and NIKE for which he organized teambuilding activities and percussion workshops all over the world.

Roël Calister is geboren in het jaar 1979 op Curaçao, Nederlandse Antillen. Het werd al snel duidelijk dat percussie een speciale plek in zijn leven zal innemen. Al op jonge leeftijd maakte hij, bij het gebrek van een echt instrument, zelf zijn instrumenten of gebruikte hij wat hij voor handen had als instrument. Iets dat erg vaak voorkomt in de Antilliaanse traditie.

Op zijn 18de vertrok hij naar Nederland om Bedrijfseconomie te studeren. Na het behalen van zijn bachelor in 2001, begon hij aan de Rotterdamse Conservatorium waar hij de richting Percussie volgde. Grote voorbeelden en invloeden op gebied van percussie en drums zijn Marcos Suzano, Cyro Baptista, Airto Moreiro, Antonio Sanchez, Brian Blade en Pernell Saturnino. Samen met de laatst genoemde percussionist, die ook afkomstig is van Curaçao, heeft Roël vijf jaar lang in de band gespeeld van jazz-zangeres en zus Izaline Calister.

Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl is zijn kracht om verschillende stijlen op een smaakvolle wijze te mixen. Zo brengt hij pop, rock, latin en jazz samen met traditionele folkloristische elementen en wereldmuziek. Naast de gebruikelijke drums en conga’s, gebruikt hij ook instrumenten zoals de cajon, udu en de pandeiro. Deze en andere instrumenten uit de Afrikaanse en Caribische collectie spelen een belangrijke rol in Roël’s project ‘At’awó’.

Naast At’awó speelt hij als vaste drummer in de band ‘Orange Grove’ en begeleidt hij jazz-zangeres Izaline Calister en andere artiesten zoals Alain Clark en Sara Tavares. Als freelance-muzikant heeft hij verschillende projecten en is hij ook een getalenteerde facilitator en percussion-motivator. In opdracht van multinationals zoals Shell, ABN Amro en Nike, heeft hij teambuilding activiteiten en percussie workshops georganiseerd.
